Just visited this amazing place for lunch w/an omni friend yesterday. After inhaling my entire meal plus the 2 adorable peices of ginger cake they bring to the table I realized I forgot to take pics! D'oh! Guess I'm coming back soon!
This place is kinda hard to find but it's on the second floor of a shopping center on the corner of Vermont & Fountain. The place is TINY, there were literally 4 small round tables lined up against a wall and no customers inside in the early afternoon but don't let that stop you from trying some awesome soul food. The owner and other employee were super duper nice answering questions about the menu, the drinks, etc. My friend had never tried ginger juice so the owner offered up a sample of the rasberry cranberry ginger drink...WOW, very smooth & refreshing, I had to order one of those. He then proceeded to show me the huge drum of fresh squeezed ginger juice he prepares everyday and explain how cooking ginger destroys it's properties. Ok, I'm definately gonna buy more fresh ginger and juice it, that stuff is so good for you!
On to ordering the main course...I asked what's a "must have" and he explained that everything was good so I got the lunch special so I could try a few different things and asked for reccomendations on the sides. Ordered up the fried pot roast w/mac & cheese (heard great things about it!), kale, & black eyed peas (not a personal fave, but I nearly cleaned the plate on that one so it mustve been good). Came w/a fresh salad (just the perfect size to complement this hearty meal), small peice of cornbread (OMG, need to get more next time!), and we received 2 small tastings of gingercake at the end of the meal. My friend apparently isn't a big eater so ordered a smoothie that was freshly made and looked refreshing.
I purchased 1 of each type of cake that was sitting on the counter for later- gingercake, chcocolate cake, and lemon cake. Wasn't sure on the lemon cake (not a big lemon fan) but the employee kindly insisted that I'd be sorry if I didn't try it so I figured what the heck? Then they start telling me about the cheesecake and carrot cake and lord knows what other goodies they have! Ok, I just have to come back and try them next time. Was a bit stuffed just then. lol.
Awesome vegan soul food & awesome friendly service for a reasonable price. I definately need to head to this area more often, it's on the way to Griffith Park so might be a nice treat before/after a day spent in nature.
